Bill Griffin

Bill Griffin was born in Cork in 1947. He went to London in 1966 to work as an artist failing miserably he sold very few works. In 1971 he got a job on an oil rig from which he hoped to provide himself with funds to further continue his artistic career. A growing family with a need for regular means kept him in the oil business for a further twenty seven years. During this time his oilfield career caused him to rub shoulders with the ‘so called’ high and mighty, none of whom seems to have particularly impressed him.

In 1999 and for no obvious reasons he suddenly went back to full time painting since then he has had eleven solo exhibitions and numerous group shows. His following is substantial and all the more phenomenal in that he rarely shows his work outside his native Cork.

He has been described as the ‘artist’s artist’. A critic in The Irish Examiner wrote, “You can get drunk on the sheer beauty of his work.” Alannah Hopkins in The Sunday Times wrote of his work as “masterly and mysterious” and calls him the master of the sublimely mysterious. Often critics have described his work as unique, provocative genius, original and balanced, truly a one off.
